Despite having all the resources in the world Microsoft cannot speed up Outlook searches. I usually can schedule a haircut and be pretty sure that the search will not be over by the time I come back.
Thanks to a 3rd party plugin called Lookout I can do most of my searches in under two seconds across all my Outlook folders. Unfortunately Lookout is not being actively developed but it still works on my XP machine.
Do a google search and download the plugin. Installation was a breeze. After restarting Outlook Lookout will index all your emails. Once the indexing is done you can search to your hearts desire.

Normally I don´t advertise products, but this I just wanted to say is fantastic!
Because I worked with Lookout and then changed to Windows Vista and Lookout stoped working I searched for a new product and I found one!
This is really great, even if it is no freeware, but it is worth the money!
